Deep dives into franchise brands with real data

Merry Maids
Brand Score: 66BCB: 6.6/10

Merry Maids

Merry Maids is one of the most recognized residential cleaning brands in North America. Founded in 1979 in Omaha, Nebraska by Dallen Peterson and his family, the company began franchising in 1980 and was acquired by ServiceMaster in 1988. Today it operates as part of ServiceMaster Brands, a home services portfolio backed by Roark Capital. The snapshot: Total units: 684 (all franchised, zero company-owned) Average gross sales: 391,007 dollars across all reporting outlets, and 439,243 dollars among Qualified Franchises Total investment: 126,875 to 169,325 dollars Royalty: 7 percent of gross sales Our read, from the seat of a former franchisor, a franchise consultant, and a business broker: Merry Maids is a brand-strength and systems play. You are buying four decades of name recognition, a recurring-revenue model, and the backing of one of the largest home services operators in the country. The counterweight is unit contraction. The system has lost 221 locations in three years, and closures have outpaced openings every year since 2022. That does not make Merry Maids a bad opportunity, but it makes disciplined validation non-negotiable. This deep dive is educational and informational. It reflects our independent opinion based on public information and the FDD, and it is not an endorsement.

Men In Kilts
Brand Score: 71BCB: 7/10

Men In Kilts

Men In Kilts is a North American exterior cleaning franchise built on one of the most recognizable brand identities in home services: crews that show up in kilts. Founded in 2002 in Vancouver, British Columbia and franchising since 2010, the brand now operates as part of the Threshold Brands multi-brand franchisor platform. The concept bundles recurring and seasonal revenue streams, including window cleaning, gutter cleaning, pressure washing, house washing, and holiday lighting, into a single low-overhead, crew-based model. From the seat of a former franchisor, franchise consultant, and business broker, the appeal is clear. Entry cost is low (roughly 101,000 to 148,000 dollars all-in), the brand recognition is disproportionate to the system size, and these services are needed in every neighborhood. The caution is equally clear. The system is still small (the latest U.S. FDD reports 27 franchised U.S. outlets, with additional locations in Canada), average unit volume is modest, and the business is labor-intensive and seasonal in colder climates. Bottom line: this is a value-entry, owner-operator opportunity with real brand equity and wide-open territory, not a high-ceiling, passive-income machine.

Meineke Car Care Centers
Brand Score: 70BCB: 7/10

Meineke Car Care Centers

Meineke Car Care Centers is one of the most recognized names in American automotive repair. Founded in 1972 in Houston, Texas by Sam Meineke as a discount muffler shop, the brand began franchising that same year. It has grown into a full service car care network of roughly 700 centers across the United States, all of them franchised. Today Meineke operates under Driven Brands, the publicly traded automotive services platform (NASDAQ: DRVN) that also owns Maaco, CARSTAR, Take 5 and others. That parent gives Meineke national purchasing power, brand advertising muscle and institutional backing that very few independent shops can match. For a franchise buyer, the appeal is clear. A nationally known brand. A 100% franchised model with zero company owned competition. And healthy average unit volume, near $971,000 per center in the 2024 Franchise Disclosure Document, with four wall EBITDA around 18% for centers enrolled in the brand profitability program. The trade offs are just as real. The combined royalty and national advertising load is among the heaviest in the home and auto service world. Unit count has been flat to slightly down over the last several reported years. And this is a capital intensive, real estate and equipment heavy business, not a van based or home based concept. Our verdict is Conditional. Meineke is a proven, durable brand best suited to a well capitalized, hands on, ideally multi unit operator in a market that can support a full service shop. It is not a low cost, semi absentee or first time undercapitalized play.
